History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in the year 1919. The company was initially founded by an engineer Anton Raky. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The first company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937, when the Salzgitter Group purchased a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machines. In 1986, the company obtained the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years. Currently, SMAG is the market leader in the world, using grabs for waste disposal, worldwide cargo handling applications and agriculture.
