Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area should be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the station should not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a battery and charging area, open flames are prohibited. Never permit objects like matches or lighters to be used while somebody is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
